BREAKING: House Republicans turn back on Senate Republicans as the entire Republican Caucus devolves into chaos

Good afternoon

Good afternoon and welcome back to today’s edition of the Wolf’s Den. It’s Friday afternoon, and while I was looking forward to the weekend, I promised to keep you up to date on the latest, including any news developing on the funding battle for the Department of Homeland Security.

Just hours ago, it appeared that lawmakers had a deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security while setting aside the most explosive fights over ICE, House Republicans are already blowing it up.

What was supposed to be a basic act of governance has now become another ugly reminder that the Republican Party cannot govern itself, let alone the country.

I will break down everything you need to know about this fight, where it currently stands and why Republican incompetence is the story that’s breaking through the logjams of Congress right now.

Before I continue, please consider becoming a paid subscriber. Supporting independent journalists like me is a vital way to protect our democracy, hold Donald Trump accountable and build a media movement that can rival the best workings of the MAGA ecosystem.

The Senate had negotiated and passed a path forward. But now House Republicans, especially the Freedom Caucus, are revolting, trashing their own Senate counterparts and throwing the entire process into uncertainty. Instead of working to keep DHS functioning, they are melting down because the deal did not go far enough for their hardline demands.

That includes their continued insistence on shielding ICE from even the most basic scrutiny and reform.

This is the core of the story. Republicans are so committed to defending every aspect of ICE’s conduct that they are willing to drag the entire Department of Homeland Security into crisis. They are refusing compromise. They are refusing accountability. And they are once again showing the American people that ideological extremism matters more to them than actual governing.

The consequences are not theoretical.

We are already seeing what happens when DHS funding is thrown into chaos: airport delays, massive TSA lines, rising frustration for travelers, and growing dysfunction across the country. At a time of international instability and heightened national security concerns, this is the last moment the United States should be playing games with homeland security funding.

And yet that is exactly what Republicans are doing.

One House Republican, Rep. Mark Harris of North Carolina, lashed out at Senate Republicans and declared, “I am done with Senate Republicans. Their failure to fully fund DHS is not just disappointing, it’s a disgrace.”

That quote says everything. Republicans are not just fighting Democrats. They are fighting each other. House Republicans are attacking Senate Republicans. Leadership is flailing. Mike Johnson had to postpone a press conference because he still cannot get his own caucus under control.

This is not strength. This is not leadership. This is not serious governing.

It is Republican chaos.

And while this specific funding fight may not decide the midterms on its own, the broader pattern absolutely will. Voters can see what is happening. They can see a Republican Party that cannot pass basic legislation, cannot manage its own internal divisions, and cannot perform the simplest responsibilities of governing without spiraling into dysfunction.

That matters.

Americans are exhausted by the chaos. They are tired of watching extremists hold the country hostage. They are tired of paying the price through delays, disorder, and declining trust in public institutions. And they are increasingly recognizing that Republicans are not a governing party. They are a grievance machine.

That is why 2026 is shaping up to be so dangerous for the GOP.

The more Republicans show the country who they are, the more opportunities Democrats will have not just in traditional battlegrounds, but in places that were once considered safely Republican. When one party is consumed by incompetence and infighting, political opportunities open everywhere.

That is the lesson here.

Republicans had a chance to do the bare minimum: fund DHS, keep TSA functioning, and stop making ordinary Americans pay for their dysfunction.

Instead, they chose chaos again.

I will continue to keep you up to date on the latest.
